How this list is developed:
Top Financial Advisers: According to Washingtonian Magazine, this is awarded based on peer nominations. “To arrive at the names of the area’s top financial advisers—the fee-only financial planners, fee-based advisers, estate attorneys, tax accountants, and insurance advisers marked with a “Top Financial Adviser” tag—we distributed surveys to hundreds of people who work in the local financial industry. We asked them whom they would trust with their own money. We also did our own research, consulting industry experts and publications. The “Top Financial Adviser” names on this list are the people who received the strongest recommendations.”
Hall of Fame: According to Washingtonian Magazine, Washingtonian began publishing a Top Financial Advisers list in 2009. Each time, we survey hundreds of financial professionals in the region and consult industry experts, asking them whom they’d trust with their own money. Those recommended the most make the roster.
Some people have been on the list year after year. This isn’t an easy feat, so we decided to honor those repeat winners. Consider this to be Washingtonian’s “lifetime achievement” award for local financial experts who have appeared on the list in at least 8 of the past 14 years.

Top Financial Advisers: According to Northern Virginia Magazine, to compile the Top Financial Professionals list, they sent surveys to Northern Virginia financial professionals asking them to recommend other financial professionals whom they would refer to friends and family. Northern Virginia Magazine’s editorial staff then vetted those nominated to compile the final list.

How this list is developed:
Top Financial Advisers: According to the Washington Business Journal and the National Association of Board Certified Advisory Practices (NABCAP), NABCAP’s Premier Advisor evaluation and ranking program is an independent third-party assessment based on 20 categories of practice management; including experience, education, cost and investment planning. Participants are objectively compared and evaluated numerically. A minimum score must be attained for a practice to be considered for the list, winners are listed in alphabetical order. There is no cost for advisors to participate. The rating is not representative of any one client’s experience and is not indicative of past or future investment performance.
